Doing the work of God can be challenging and frustrating sometimes. The music landscape in Ghana is saturated with bureaucracy which frustrates lots of musicians.

Against this backdrop, if one has been in the industry for over twenty years and is still relevant today, that is a rare feat indeed and worth our attention.

Here is a list of five gospel musicians who fall within this category.

If there is one thing Nicholas Omane Acheampong is noted for, it is his unique lyrics and sense of fashion. The man burst into the gospel scene somewhere in the 90s and is still active.

Perhaps his hilarious song titles (Tabitha Kum, Zaphnat Panea etc) which he extracts from the Bible do the trick for him. The 42-year old musician latest song Aporsor has earned him nominations in the forthcoming Vodafone Ghana Music Awards: Vodafone song of the Year, Gospel Artiste of the Year, and his producer get recognition for Producer of the year.

Daughters of Glorious Jesus is a group made up of Cynthia Appiadu, Edna Sarpong and Owusu Ansah. Cynthia, the lead singer is credited for writing most of the songs. They were discovered by one Bishop Akwasi Asare Bediako, the General Overseer of Living Bread Ministries in 1987.

Their debut album, Awanwa do was released in 1990 and became an instant hit. They have won numerous awards and are highly revered in the gospel fraternity.

Their most recent project was in 2014. Information we picked up indicate they will drop something for their fans this very year.

Tagoe Sisters is another evergreen gospel group made up of two sisters, Lydia Dedei Yawson nee Tagoe and Elizebeth Korkoi Tagoe. They released their first album, Stay In My Heart in 1987 and followed it up with Nyame Ye Kese in 1990. Both albums were hugely successfully and the group soon became a household name in Ghana.

They have released other hits songs like Yesu Be Ye Ama Wo, Manya Yesu and Watua Maka.

Stella Dugan’s Gyem Taataa happens one of my favourite songs of all time. Stella made her debut in 1990 with the song You Are in My Heart which unfortunately didn’t do well. According to beautiful songstress the album flopped because the local could not relate to the song, as it was done in English language.

However the following year her second album Daada Nyinara became arguably the biggest song of that year. This made her win Entertainment Critics and Reviewers Association (ECRAG) award for Best Gospel Album of The Year.

The veteran is also blessed with a soothing and refreshing voice which has won her much admiration.

Yaw Sarpong has an incredible 25 music albums. In an exclusive media interview, he disclosed that he will release a song this year so he urged his fans to watch out for it. He won the Best Gospel album in 1999.

Yaw Sarpong is considered one of pioneers of gospel music in the country.
